Literature Text

When we arrived, you told me
As we waited on the bus
"The best week of your life is here."
I didn't believe you.

But at that one evening practice, you told me
As I staggered on the field
"It's better to sit out now."
I didn't believe you.

Afterwards, you told me
As I winced in pain
"I'm carrying you to the clinic."
I didn't believe you.

In the clinic you told me
As you handed me your own knee brace
"You're not going to march tomorrow."
I didn't believe you.

The next day, you told me
As I paced on the sideline
"Sit down; you'll be out for the rest of the week."
I didn't believe you.

That night, you told me
As you held me in your arms
"I'd do anything for you."
I didn't believe you.

When I laid there lifeless, you told me
As the agony took my strength
"I love you."
I didn't believe you.

In the midst of the heartbreak, you told me
As I cried myself to sleep
"You are so brave."
I didn't believe you.

The next week, you told me
As we marched onto the football field
"Don't push it- you're making me worried."
I didn't believe you.

After the show, you told me
As we limped out of the stadium
"Just worry about yourself- I'm fine."
I didn't believe you.

Later, you told me
As we walked hand in hand
"No matter what, it all pays off in the end."
I believed you.
